You know it's been a good work week when you have to write a list of all the topics and exciting things you need to blog about so you remember it all. This was one of those weeks. I was super honored that The Wedding Chicks featured my DIY Custom Floral Containers on their lovely blog---A double feature! See it here and here.

I have been a long-time fan of The Wedding Chicks because I trust that anytime I click on a little link to their blog, I will be inspired. I love their DIY freebies, real weddings, and their amazing vendors. Plus, one of the brains behind this lovely little wedding blog happens to have been my beloved wedding photographer, Amy Squires. In many ways, Amy inspired me to pursue going into business for myself and to be excellent at it. And I love her for that. And for my wedding photos---thank you Amy!

A special thank you Vanessa of Flourish Studio Photography for these pics. I had a lot of fun doing this with you! Enjoy the feature folks (:

Crooked Willow Photoshoot Part 1

I can't even contain my excitement about sharing these pictures! This photoshoot was the brain child of a random day when Rachel of Talia Events and I were totally inspired by the burnt orange fabric on one of the comfy chairs at Starbucks...And this is what happens when you get a couple of designer girls talking about burnt orange comfy chairs!

I couldn't sleep last night thinking about these lovely pictures---EEEK! Last week, my new friend Vanessa of Flourish Studio Photography and I met up for a little DIY floral photo shoot. While I am not a huge fan of the DIY movement, especially regarding wedding flowers (another subject for another time---do you really want to be wiring wholesale orchids at 3am the day of your wedding?!), I am a huge promoter of the natural beauty of flowers. Flowers are so naturally gorgeous that there is not a lot we need to do to them to make stunning, custom arrangements. And if you have any sort of creative knack, designing simple, monochromatic arrangements like these should be a piece of cake. The theme for this DIY feature is creating funky, unique containers for your arrangements that compliment the flowers' natural beauty! Enjoy!

Supply List:

Scissors

Ruler

Pencil

Fun, Funky Patterned Scrapbook paper

Spray Adhesive (You an buy this at any craft store---I bought mine at Michael's)

Decorative ribbon

Containers to cover like bud vases, square vases, cylinder vases, or empty food cans

Floral Foam (optional)

Your favorite flowers

STEP 1: Choose the container you would like to cover and measure a strip of the scrapbook paper to fit around the container.

Step 2: Cut the scrapbook paper into a strip that fits around the container.

STEP 3: Spray a thin layer of the spray adhesive onto your scrapbook paper strip on the side you want adhered to the container. Wait one minute for the spray adhesive to get really sticky.

STEP 4: Carefully adhere the scrapbook paper strip to the container.

STEP 5: To add more visual interest to your container, spray a measured piece of ribbon with the spray adhesive and adhere to the container.

STEP 6: Then, fill your container about halfway full with water. Cut flower stems at an angle to ensure they get the most water pumping through their stems.

NOTE: For a more handpicked feel, simply cut the stems and place in the container. For more of a controlled, full look, you can use floral foam. Simply cut the floral foam into a piece that fits snugly into your container and insert stems into foam.

And voila! A custom, unique floral arrangement ready to be showed off at your next big event.

This method of covering containers can work for a variety of containers and creates a fun, custom look! Great for bridal showers, centerpieces, place cards, and votive candles. For larger containers, you can use a fabric covering using the same method of adhering with the spray adhesive. Be bold, be creative, be fun. Below are some more ideas for arrangements and shapes of vases. Enjoy!

As a floral designer, I frequently encounter brides who are floundering through the wedding planning process. I mean, you are in engagement bliss and–wham!–all of a sudden, you are expected to become a full time party planner, experienced negotiator, and the budget manager of quite a large and important event. Not only that, but you’re supposed to enjoy it and be good at it!

Now, I could go on and on about the benefits of having a great wedding planner and/or stylist to help you out for this (another topic for another time!) but want to spend this post preparing you for an important part of the wedding planning process: choosing your floral designer...

Did you know that the holidays mark the biggest engagement season of the year? It is estimated that 1/3 of engagements happen during this prime time, which is why I thought it appropriate to prepare the many newly engaged couples with a quick and easy guide to floral design consultations.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK

Before you meet with 10 different floral designers and have the headache of having to sort through proposal after proposal, do a little research. My top favorite places for finding great wedding vendors are wedding blogs; try Style Me Pretty, Green Wedding Shoes, Once Wed, Wedding Chicks–and Indie Bliss, of course!), preferred vendor lists from wedding planners or venues, and recommendations from friends and family.

Before you even meet with a floral designer for a consultation, be sure you like their style, that your wedding date is available, and make them aware of any budget concerns. Other helpful information to have before you meet is their average wedding cost, their business philosophy, and their booking policies. Once you have all this information in hand, schedule 2-3 consultations with your favorites.
